The migrant population in China amounted to 140 million in 2003, exceeding 10% of the total population, according to a report released Tuesday by the National Commission for Family Planning (CNPF).

China is in a culminating stage in terms of its migrant population with the acceleration of urbanization, said the work session on family planning of migrant population, currently underway in Ningbo, a city of Zhejiang Province (east China). The migrant population has reached 121 million in 2000, with 786, 5 million people having moved from province to province, as a 5th survey on the 2000 census.

The increase in the migrant population makes more difficult the delivery system status, as well as employment and social security, told the meeting. A final review of the CNPF, 54% of migrant families have no access to government subsidies granted specifically to one child and 79% of the migrant population must support the medical expenses.
