Representatives of the Quartet for Peace in the Middle East met Tuesday to the UN office in Jerusalem to discuss the possible role of Egypt in the Gaza Strip after Israel’s withdrawal, according to Israeli newspaper Haaretz .

The meeting, which follows that of June 24 in Taba, Egypt, was attended by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State David Satterfield U.S., the Russian envoy to the Middle East Alexander Kalugin, the representative of the European Union Marc Otte and the UN Terje Roed-Larsen.

Egypt has offered to send 150 to 200 officers and security experts for a six-month mission to help the formation of a Palestinian security force of 30 000 men after the Israeli withdrawal.

This suggestion was adopted by the Quartet at the Taba meeting last month.

Representatives of the Quartet should thereafter meet with Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmad Qurei on Wednesday.

Speaking after a weekly cabinet meeting in the West Bank city of Ramallah, Qurei expressed his hope that Tuesday’s meeting would mark the beginning of greater involvement in the peace process by the quartet.

“We hope the Quartet will meet more often and reinforce its observation of the situation on the ground to revive the roadmap and negotiations on final status,” he said.
