62nd session of the UNHRC UN: Assembly adjourned for another week

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) of the United Nations has suspended again Monday morning a week its 62nd and final session in Geneva.

President of the HRC, Ambassador Manuel Rodriguez Cuadros of Peru, announced the suspension shortly after the opening of the session, saying the decision had been taken by consensus to allow the Economic and Social Council , which is scheduled to meet Tuesday in New York, defined as (agenda, time) that the HRC will hand over to the Council.

“It is necessary to have a decision by the Economic and Social Council for the Commission to resume its work in a consistent manner,” said Cuadros, announcing: “I adjourn this meeting to resume Monday afternoon.

The HRC had already adjourned for a week from its formal opening last Monday, pending the decision of the General Assembly of the United Nations on the establishment of the Council of Human Rights.

The General Assembly adopted the United Nations last Wednesday in New York on the resolution establishing the Council of Human Rights, despite opposition from the United States. The Council, comprising 47 Member States elected by secret ballot and absolute majority of the General Assembly shall meet for the first time June 19 in Geneva.
