Rising oil prices hinders the development of world economy (Russian minister)

Rising oil prices affected the poor and has hindered the development of the global economy, announced Thursday in Moscow Russian Minister of Energy and Industry Viktor Khristenko.

In his opening speech at the two-day meeting on the G8 energy, Khristenko said that energy prices on the world market were not favorable for the moment, for higher oil prices had caused a rise in prices of several other energy resources.

Massive investments are needed to create an efficient energy supply in the world, Khristenko said, urging all parties to work together to achieve a comprehensive program of action on energy.

This meeting should address a range of issues such as diversification of energy supply to meet growing demand, and the development of cleaner technologies.

Russia said that energy security is the central problem of its G8 presidency this year.

The energy ministers of Russia, Brazil, India, China, Mexico and South Africa, as well as representatives from the World Bank, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC ) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IEA) and the International Forum of Energy attended the meeting.
