Chinese imports of iron ore rose 10% in 2006 to around 301 million tons, according to the China Iron and Steel. China last year imported 275 million tons of iron ore when it produced 349 million of crude steel, according to a report released by the State Commission for Development and Reform Commission.

The association predicted that China’s total output of iron ore would rise to 528 million tons this year, up 48 million tons over the same period last year.

Total production of crude steel is estimated at 384 million tons in 2006, while demand for iron ore will increase by 45.88 million tons to reach 558 million tons

According to the association, major mines in China produced 102 million tons of iron ore in the first quarter of the year, an increase of 32.83% year on year.
