One in eight Americans lives below the poverty line
One in eight Americans lived below the poverty line in 2005 and the poor is the “Third World” society of the United States, says “File on the situation of human rights in the United U.S. in 2006 released Thursday by the Information Office of the Council of State Affairs of China.
There were 37 million poor Americans in 2005, or 12.6% of the U.S. population. 7.7 million American families live below the poverty line, according to a report released August 29 by the Census Bureau United States.
The poverty rate has reached respectively 32.4% and 31.4% in Cleveland and Detroit. Almost one in three Americans in those two cities were below the poverty line.
Between 2000 and 2005, growth in the U.S. economy has reached 12% and productivity increased by 17%. During this period, the wages of average Americans has increased by only 3%. Their real incomes have declined taking into account the growth in this period.
