China cut its military than 200 000 between 2003 and 2005, according to White Paper

China announced Friday it had reduced its military than 200 000 between 2003 and 2005.

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) currently has 2.3 million troops, according to a White Paper on National Defense of China in 2006, published by the Office of Information Affairs Council of State.

China announced in 1985, 1997 and in 2003 it would reduce its troops by one million, 500 000 and 200 000 respectively.

According to the White Paper, over 130 000 staff of the Army has been reduced. Over 3 000 departments above the regimental level and 400 units directly under the seat and above the regimental level have been removed.

The White Paper also acknowledged the improvement in the ratio between officers and soldiers through the reduction of 170 000 officers.
