Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said Wednesday that the Ethiopian forces, who fought the Union of Islamic Courts alongside the transitional government in Somalia last month, would leave the country in three phases.

Meles said that the deployment of the Mission of the African Union in Somalia should be held before the end of the third phase of the withdrawal of Ethiopian forces.

He said at a news conference that troops had started to leave Somalia since Tuesday and that the withdrawal should be completed within weeks.

Mr. Meles, the withdrawal of Ethiopian troops will take place on schedule, regardless of the deployment of the Mission of the African Union.
