Bird flu back in Europe

version A “highly pathogenic” virus of avian flu was found in a flock of geese in southern Hungary. This is the first reported case in the EU since August 2006, said the European Commission.

The Hungarian authorities’ suspicions were aroused by a mortality rate particularly high recorded in a group of some 3,000 geese. Samples made by Hungarian scientists have confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic H5.

samples were sent to the Community Reference Laboratory in Weybridge (UK) to determine if it is the H5N1 variant, potentially deadly to humans.

As a precaution, the Hungarian authorities have euthanized all geese belonging to the group infected. A protection zone around the site has also been established within which all poultry must be confined, and forbidden for transport.
