In France, the Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy was officially nominated candidate of his party in the presidential election next April. The UMP, in power, gave Mr Sarkozy overwhelming support.

Nearly 70% of members in good standing of the Union for a Popular Movement voted for Mr. Sarkozy, now expects a tough race against the main candidate of the Left, the Socialist Ségolène Royal.

Mr. Sarkozy thanked the tens of thousands of his supporters gathered in a conference room on the southern outskirts of Paris.

The interior minister has attracted both praise and scorn for his program. He wants to cut the sacrosanct protections for workers, police intervention muscles in the suburbs and deport illegal immigrants.

Whatever the outcome of the next election, it will be France for the start of a new era after twelve years of the presidency of Jacques Chirac, who probably does not seek a third term.

Many voters hoped that the next president will restore confidence in a country worried about its future in Europe and worldwide.
