The US-Korean talks continue

Representatives of the United States and Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) Tuesday continued their discussions on the nuclear crisis on the Korean Peninsula and on measures to normalize their bilateral relations.

The Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill and Deputy Minister North Korean Foreign Affairs Kim Kye-gwan, had conducted a working lunch and a private meeting Monday night.

“We started to discuss the process of normalization between North Korea and the United States,” Mr. Hill said Tuesday morning.

He said the process included a number of factors, including the fact that the U.S. regards the DPRK as a state that supports terrorism.

Many are those who describe these talks as historic, but the spokesman State Department Sean McCormack said that one should not expect immediate results.

“I think it will take time to complete the process,” said Mr. McCormack told reporters.

These discussions are long overdue response to the six-party talks (China, DPRK, the United States, South Korea, Japan, Russia), which ended February 13, 2007 in Beijing with a statement joint on the first step toward the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohammed ElBaradei, is scheduled to visit Pyongyang March 13 to discuss the control of the dismantling of nuclear facilities in the DPRK.
