Lebanese PM visits Paris for a conference of international donors

Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora on Wednesday morning has left Beirut for Paris for an international conference of donor countries after the reopening of Beirut International Airport.

The Paris conference on the long-term assistance for the reconstruction of Lebanon will be held Thursday in the presence of some thirty countries, donors and many international institutions. The ministerial delegation composed of Lebanese Finance Minister Jihad Azour, Minister of Economy and Trade Haddad, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Michel Faraon and Governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon Riad Salameh, arrived last Monday paris.

Beirut airport resumed operations Wednesday morning after Tuesday blocked by opposition demonstrators who staged a general strike, burning tires and pouring sand and stones on the roads leading to the airport. The militant pro-and anti-government clashed in the day, while security forces killed three people and injured 50 others.

The alliance of the Lebanese opposition organized a sit-in until further notice in downtown Beirut since December 1 last year to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, calling the anti-Syrian cabinet of illegal and calling early parliamentary elections and a new electoral law.

The government supported the alliance’s parliamentary majority March 14, 2006 dismissing the appeal, accusing the opposition headed by Hezbollah of trying to obstruct the creation of an international tribunal to prosecute the suspected killers Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005.
