The proven reserves of natural gas from the Uygur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang in China’s north-west rose to 1 290 billion m3 in 2006, making it the leading country.

Xinjiang is endowed with natural gas reserves estimated at 10 000 billion m3, accounting for one fourth of the total mainland China.
