The Nigerian government announced Friday that tests were conducted on samples taken on 11 new suspected human cases of avian flu in Lagos, as the Punch newspaper published Saturday.

Abdullahi Nasidi, a reply from the Ministry of Health, found that people, on which samples were taken for analysis, had been in contact with a woman of 22 who was confirmed dead from bird flu, the first fatal human cases of the disease in Nigeria.

The unidentified woman died January 17 in Lagos after attending the étripage and plucked a chicken that his family had purchased. The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday want to have in a few days the results of tests from samples taken from the victim.

samples obtained on three other suspected cases in Nigeria, including another fatal, have all proved negative after preliminary tests. These samples were sent to a reference laboratory for WHO for further analysis.
